What Is Sustainability?
Over the last few decades, we’ve heard the term “sustainability” used more and more frequently. There have been many individuals, movements, companies, and organizations pushing to be more sustainable. But, what exactly is sustainability?
What Sustainability Really Means
Sustainability is defined as “the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level.” Sustainability deals with whether something will be able to continue as it currently exists into the future without any negative consequences. Simply put, can we continue this way without depleting resources?
There are four main pillars of sustainability, including human, social, economic, and—perhaps most important—environmental. All four of these pillars impact one another and determine whether the planet—which we all live on, eat and drink from, and are alive because of—can continue to sustain us at our current levels of consumption.
If something is determined to not be sustainable, like current levels of water consumption for example, then it requires a change in order to make sure there are enough water resources in the future. This is especially common in warmer climates and desert locations where water can be hard to come by. For example, California experiences droughts almost every year and, in an effort to make water consumption sustainable, often limits when citizens can water plants and yards in order to not waste water.
Sustainability is all about the long-term viability of communities and the planet as a whole. The shift to renewable energy has been an example of how humans make necessary changes in the effort to be more sustainable.
At Aqua Clara, we are committed to all forms of sustainability, but especially water sustainability. We provide access to clean water by designing, developing, and disseminating clean water technologies to benefit those who live on less than $2 per day. We also aim to reduce the number of people who purchase bottled water by offering our Universal Cartridge Filter, which reduces many different contaminants. You can purchase a filter directly from our website, or they are also now available at Wal-Mart and on Amazon.
Our Universal Cartridge Filter fits most household filter products, includes a rubber seal to protect against contamination, and will purify your home’s drinking water at a reasonable price. The proceeds from these filters help fund our projects all over the world, so consider helping us make a difference by purchasing a filter today!
